Impersonation through facebook accounts

Police would like to remind the public to be vigilant against scammers who gained unauthorized access into Facebook accounts and impersonate the real account holders to ask their Facebook friends for loans or financial assistance to tide over unfortunate events. From January to February 2014, at least 6 cases had been reported of which more than $19 000 had been cheated. Members of public are reminded to adopt the following crime prevention measures to avoid falling victim to such scams:

i. Never transfer/remit money or give credit card or online account details before checking on the authenticity of the request and recipient.

ii. Alert the account holder when you receive messages of such nature. This will also assist you to check as to whether he/she is indeed facing difficulties.

iii. If you are unable to contact the account holder, check with his family members or other friends on his whereabouts before providing any form of assistance.

If you have any information related to this crime, please call the Police hotline at 1800-255 0000 or dial 999 for urgent Police assistance. Information can also be submitted online at www.spf.gov.sg/CrimeStopper. All information will be kept strictly confidential.

Heather Chua Scam

A Facebook profile by the name of "Heather Chua" has become a sensation of the internet. The person behind the female account is a male who has been insulting many groups of people. We are quite disgusted by him for cheating photos from models by faking modelling jobs.

Man, 22, under police probe for posting racist remarks under pseudonym ‘Heather Chua’

A 22-year-old man is under investigation by local police for a string of offensive remarks he allegedly posted under the fictitious name “Heather Chua” on Facebook.

In a statement issued on Friday, police said several members of the public have filed police reports against his posts, which angered many Internet users. The first, police said, was filed on 3 January this year.

Police said they determined the 22-year-old’s identity through “extensive investigations”. The man is now assisting police with their investigations.

Police warned also that any person found guilty of promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion or race, and carrying out acts that undermine harmony, can be jailed for up to three years and fined.

Using the moniker “Heather Chua”, the man allegedly posted comments insulting the work of National Servicemen, ITE graduates and Malays, among a series of other things. “Chua”’s posts, which were frequently geotagged to Sentosa Cove, ignited the ire of many Facebook users, prompting the efforts of some to track down who “she” was.

In a recent post, "Chua" told a lengthy story of a friend of hers from Raffles Girls' School who got married to an ITE graduate. "She" claimed that her friend's parents disapproved of their relationship "because of his poor family background and where he came from", adding that they did not attend her wedding while saying how "extremely disappointed in her" "she" was.

Several bloggers accused him of creating fake modelling events in a bid to trick aspiring models to send their portfolio pictures to him. They also said in various posts on Facebook that the photographs of luxury cars “Chua” posts on “her” Facebook profile contain digitally altered licence plates that do not exist on Singapore’s vehicle listings.

The female images used as “Chua”’s profile pictures were also allegedly stolen from Thai actress and blogger Pimpatchara Vajrasevee. The latter also previously took to her Instagram account to call “Chua” out for stealing her pictures, but she allegedly denied doing so in comments on Vajrasevee's pictures.

According to screengrabs of “Chua”’s account, “her” birthday is 25 July 1973, and listed the University of Phoenix, National University of Singapore, Temasek Junior College and Raffles Girls’ School among her places of education.

By Wednesday, the man’s Facebook profile had been taken down.

Facebook Impersonate Scam to Ask Victim's Friends for Money

We have witnessed many fake social media profiles in both Facebook and Tagged. Most of the accounts are pretty "harmless".

Today, we have been notified about a more unusual impersonate scam (has happened before though) that the scammer is trying to con the victim's friends into "loaning" him/her money.

We would like to advise everyone that if you happen to receive a text from a friend whether through social media or SMS to ask for "help", it's better to double confirm by calling the person directly to hear the voice, or even to meet up the person. You will never know who has hacked or stolen your friend's account or even phone.

Perhaps, the only smart thing about this faker is that he/she has a decent profile write-up. He/She does not seem to be buying "pets" and thus is unlikely to be using the profile to play the PETS game. The profile is also set to "private" while most fake profiles are "public". We have no idea what this scammer is trying to do.

Despite the fake account is only around 12-day-old, the real owner of the photos, Irene Tan, has already encountered "hi" from three or four strangers on the street.

Kind souls, please report and block this fake account.

Singapore Model Kayla Wong Impersonate Scam

Our own Singapore models have their shares of worries for impersonate issues. Young model like Kayla Wong has also been targeted by scammer who probably agrees that she has a very appealing looks. We mean scammers do not only rip Taiwan or Hong Kong girls' photos.

As usual, Tagged.com (merged with hi5.com) has allowed all scams to be made easy.

We are not sure of the intention (likely just for the dumb pets game) of the fake profile. However, we do know it's difficult to get these clones removed. The "report abuse" link on the profile is probably workable for the FBI.

After submitting a report, you will get the same template reply:

We will need the original owner of the pictures to contact us in order to confirm their identity. Please be aware that we can only take action if the stolen photo is of the actual person.

In order for us to take action against the user who has stolen your photos, we'll need you to contact us directly from the email address registered to your Tagged account. Please submit your report as follows and follow these verification steps:

We are not sure how well it will work but we have heard of users having problems replying to the email with attachment of their photos while following the instructions above. Anyway, it's just stupid to follow the steps.

Just a random sideline: Tagged doesn't even have a "remove friend" link on individual profiles so that we can easily remove fake profiles after adding and realising they are hoax.

We predict Tagged.com will eventually be shut down due to the large influx of fake accounts since they have no better way to stop them. With real users abandoning the social media website, how long can it last?

We do love the website for its ease of use and making friends, but seriously, can their team do a better job?

Fake Policeman Scam

We have received a blog comment a couple of months ago regarding a phone scam. Sorry for not posting this up earlier because it has gone into the spam list automatically.

Fraudster Threatening Sex crime: I received a mail to call a number 9350 2840. The call got cut and received obscene message soliciting pros. I replied asking for identity and later a stupid scamster called from 85870482 stating that he is a cop and I need to meet him at jurong west police station. He said some guy having no 85958031 and complained about me because i messaged her daugher (mob9350 2840). I knew I did not msg anything wrong still he called me.
I subsequently searched this number in the internet and i found a link that this guy/guys has/have been threatening many people link:http://whocallsme.com/Phone-Number.aspx/82692175
These miscreants should be punished. Please suggest a way to post this link to police anonymously to help fellow singaporeans to face these kind of cheap crooks

Do note that the mobile numbers of the tricksters may change. We hope you will just remember that there is this kind of trick and not fall for it in future.

Impersonate Scam Targeting Model Naomi Liu

For various purposes, scammers have been creating fake profiles on social networking websites such as Facebook and Tagged. Scammers targeting Singapore residents do not only impersonate foreign models, but our local ones as well.

Popular Singapore model Naomi Liu is someone who has been facing problems of her photos being misused by others to impersonate her. We are not surprised since she has been publishing her daily attractive photos online to share with her fans. The model with extremely sweet looks and hot figure indeed has caught the attention of many guys, including scammers.

Below are just a few of the fake Facebook profiles who have not only used her photos, but also using her name, trying to impersonate her totally. We are not sure of the purposes of the scammers though.

We would say the first scammer is the cleverest out of them since he or she has actually placed Naomi's blog URL inside the profile information page, which will further mislead visitors that it is the real Naomi's Facebook page.

It is rather difficult to identify some fake social network profiles if you are unfamiliar with the existence of models. In the cases of the fake Naomi Liu's profiles mentioned above, there are in fact not many obvious clues that can identify them as scam. Unless you know the real Naomi's Facebook profile, you should not blame yourself even if you fall for the tricks.

What we can do in order to prevent being scammed is to exercise extra care and not being blinded by the hot photos of social networking profiles in your friends list. Models are usually being pestered by their wishful fans and do not have much time for you. If any hot model in your contact list tries to hook up with you, you better not say "yes" to any request.

Meanwhile, please help Naomi to file report in Facebook to report the fake profiles.

Facebook Identity Theft Scam - Verene See

One of the toughest social media network scammers to determine/expose is one who constantly updates his/her fake profile.

Scammers usually create fake profiles to advertise for services/products, solicit for "help", prank others or even scam others directly for money. It is not easy to maintain extra social media network profiles and therefore, not many fake accounts will be maintained frequently. Those fake accounts that are well-maintained are usually for profitable reasons such as scamming for money or simply for work purpose (including cam girls's jobs).

Some months ago, we were looking at a fake profile who did not seem to be selling any product or service and neither a cam girl. The name was "Verene See". We did not discover anything strange about her at first despite some of her sexy photos uploaded were familiar. However, it seemed like her photos were in two different styles. It was until she started teasing her Facebook friends to LIKE her hot photo before she would upload new ones, we started searching around and realised many of the photos belonged to a Taiwanese girl - 徐湘婷, also known as 徐小湘. This Taiwanese girl was just a girl-next-door who had rose to fame because of her blog that included her hot photos of her sweet looks and 32F cup size.

We guess (yes, cannot confirm about this) that Verene See could be someone who resembles the Taiwanese girl and thus she is using her photos. We do not know her real motive for doing so.

Her previous Facebook account was GONE before we could broadcast about it, however, another new Facebook account with the name "Verene See" seemed to have emerged recently - https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100003746033639.

徐小湘 is a Taiwanese and should be still living in Taiwan. Whereas, she is not from any Singapore school such as Singapore Chinese Girls' School (SCGS) or Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP).

Basically, we can confirm that those photos with the longer and sweeter hair belong to 徐小湘. For example, the second photo from the top row does not fit 徐小湘's style as it looks more rebellious type.

Through our investigation through the Internet, it has been long since scammers have started using 徐小湘's photos to create fake accounts in Facebook. However, since 徐小湘 is a Taiwanese, not many Singaporeans would know about her name, but definitely would have seen her hot photos somewhere in the Internet before.

無名正妹徐小湘憑著32F的「碗公奶」闖蕩網路，吸引大批粉絲，尤其之前還有露點自拍外流，更是吸引上萬人造訪她的部落格，可說是「名氣響亮」。但也因為如此，讓她的身份不斷遭人盜用，光是臉書(Facebook)上就有好幾人以她的姓名註冊，甚至還「種菜」。

擁有32F好身材的無名正妹徐小湘，因為堅挺的胸型被網友虧為「碗公奶」，而她似乎也相當以一雙豪乳為傲，自拍時總是不忘低胸穿著，沒溝的照片不拍。另外，她還有個裝可愛、無辜的「絕招」，更是令宅男為之瘋狂，「童顏巨乳」的形容詞她絕對當之無愧。

Basically, there are many fake Facebook profiles around but we are not able to confirm even though we have our doubts on them. We also have limited resources to assess each and everyone of them. Fake Employment Scam Targeting Foreigners

As reported by MediaCorp Channel 8 news, there is a stupid scammer who offered to help foreigners to get jobs in Singapore via the Internet.

He got the victims down to a restaurant and asked them for a sum of $1000 each so that he could help their overseas relatives to get S-Passes to work in Singapore. The reason for placing the deposit was to make sure the interested job applicants would not go back on their words.

Why do we label the scammer as "stupid"?

The waitresses recognised the scammer as an ex-staff of the restaurant and thus his identity has been exposed to allow police to summon him over for investigation soon if he has not left Singapore.

We are sure that similar scam method would eventually evolve. Do take note and be careful.

Bogus Property Agent Taken By Laws

Recently, a 45-year-old man, Tan Cher Peng, has been sentenced to four months' jail and fined S$32,000 for representing himself as a property agent without being registered with the Council for Estate Agencies (CEA). He is the first person to be sentenced under such laws.

All property (real estate) agents have to be registered in Singapore. This is to ensure that all property agents are being monitored and are subjected to terms and conditions to protect consumers in the market. All property agents have to pass certain test(s) and not have criminal records in order to obtain the license from CEA, which also lift up the standard of the agents in Singapore, not allowing any Tom, Dick or Harry to handle customers without proper knowledge.

Currently, all property agents have to wear a lanyard with his identification card provided by his company at all time while at work. The card will also indicate his CEA registered number.

If you find anything amiss with the property agent, you can always call CEA to check on him. CEA will also help to investigate if the agent displays dishonesty.

Tagged Scammer Lawrence Tan Failed

The tagged scammer's account, which we have reported last year, has finally been removed by Tagged on around 9th January 2012.

Initially, the owner of the photo stolen by this scammer had tried to email Tagged as indicated in their website. After the first respond of Tagged to ask for a recent photo of the owner/victim, all emails sent to them were "bounded" back. There was totally no way to contact the staffs for assistance as they did not even have a "contact us" form.

This Lawrence Tan scammer eventually strike using the mobile phone chat feature of Tagged to try to hook up with the victim's friend (he obviously didn't know their relationship) and she managed to make him divulge his MSN email (lawrencex789@gmail.com), and thus pawning himself.

He could have been considering to abandon that email address ever since...

Anyway, if you were to google for the email lawrencex789@gmail.com, you can probably find him being involved in an adult forum, which is mainly in Chinese language. A brief investigation of the website shows that it displays photos and contact numbers of China women who come over to Singapore to make extra money.

You can probably guess what Lawrence has been up to all these years.

Before Lawrence Tan's Tagged account was removed, probably with the aid of the victim's friends who had helped to report him, he had uploaded and changed his default photo to a picture of a dance floor. He had removed another victim's photo from his profile but still keeping the latter one.

Girls, please be aware of the people you make friends with through the internet. If they were to add you up in MSN or other messengers such as Yahoo or Skype, make sure they have webcam to prove that the photos in their social network profiles really belong to them.

Please do not be fooled by guys with big belly, sitting in front of their computers and getting satisfied by online teasing or whatever.

Fire Extinguisher Scam is finally broadcast

The fire extinguisher scam was finally reported in one of Singapore's main stream medias' website on Friday, Dec 23, 2011.

Please remind your friends and family to call the Singapore police force (dial 999) immediately if the scammer goes to them. Do take more photos of the scammer if possible.

Unusual Tagged Scam - Social Network Site Scam

With the emerging of social networking sites such as Facebook, MySpace and Tagged, we get to experience more scams than ever.

Many people have created fake social profiles for many reasons. Some people are addicted to the sites' games and need the extra boost from another account, while some are purely for marketing purpose. Many foreign ladies who are working as cam girls or social escorts have made their presence more than ever in the social networking sites, which is safer than getting clients at Geylang physically. There are also scams that con male users to sign up at certain cam sites, which require their credit cards information.

Details of all these scams and how to identify them will be given in future blog posts.

In this post, we will share with you an unusual scam incident...

While most of the scam targets are male users of the social networking sites, photos of female users and hot celebrities are often being stolen and uploaded into the bogus user accounts. By pretending as hot girls, male users are likely to add or accept them as friends, and thus increasing the prey list.

However, this time, we have received a complaint about a scammer stealing picture of a male user in Tagged.

This scammer has uploaded 2 photos. The first photo is http://i7.tagstat.com/image06/0/5602/0008054s5o2.jpg, which seems to be stolen from Facebook from https://fbcdn-photos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/32097_398059863710_589113710_3979120_8259239_n.jpg and the scammer is too lazy to rename the caption, which shows the filename by default, so that we are able to find the original photo. This is probably the reason why the scammer has to steal another photo and use it to attract more girls.

The scammer's friends list currently has 80 friends, of which, more than 90% are female. Through his sexy Tagline, it is highly possible that the account is created to target female users who are open-minded and want to "try out" young guys who are curious about sex.

We urge female users of social networking sites to beware of fakers. It is absolutely nothing wrong to make friends online and even date with your net friends, but we hope you will not end up meeting some old and fat guys who have shown you some hunks' photos.

We would also like to urge users to try to put watermark on their photos before uploading to their social profiles. It will reduce the chance of being stolen. Even if the scammers were to edit the photos to remove the watermarks, the photo size and quality will be affected, and thus it is easier for you to complain to the staffs of the social network sites to prove the ownership of the original photo.
