The Singapore Police Force has warned the public not to fall prey to phone scams involving internet security. 32 cases have been reported since the beginning of this year.
On June 14, a woman had received a phone call from someone who claimed to be an employee of a well-known software company. The scammer told her that some Malaysians were trying to hack into her computer, followed by selling her a security licence in order to protect her computer.
After she handed over her credit card details, she realised S$1,300 was stolen from her account.
"I asked them to let me talk to my husband, but they said no, I had to make a decision that time, or else my computer would be blacklisted... I gave my credit card number and one-time password. Suddenly the screen went blank and some amount was charged to my account, and it was in euros," she said.
The public is advised not to divulge their credit card details to unknown person. Software company will not have your contact details. Therefore, in emergency situation, you will receive call from your Internet Service Provider (ISP), which can be Starhub, SingNet or M1. However, none of the companies would provide such security service.

Fake Tsunami Scam Alert Using Old Video
On Wednesday, 11 April 2012, a 8.9 earthquake occurred in West Sumatra, Indonesia. There was issue of tsunami warning but none had taken place. During the earthquake, residents of a few neighbourhood countries, such as Malaysia and Singapore, could feel the shaking as well.
A Singaporean "Adam Tan" who was at Penang, Malaysia reported on his Facebook status "Earthquake in Penang!!" at 4.51pm on the very same day.
When many people from all over the world were concerned about the Indonesians' well-being, Youtube footage surfaced showing that smaller waves of tsunami had occurred due to the earthquake. Eventually, there were many people who exposed that the videos were re-uploaded from old videos taken years back.
The tsunami is a scam or prank, whichever you call it, but it is definitely disgusting to joke about such thing. It will definitely cause public panic to people staying in Indonesia and Malaysia.

Unusual Internet Love Scam
Recently, an internet love scam has created a stir in Singapore.
Yap Siew Ting, 17, and her boyfriend, Alexander Soh Zhi Ren, 21, are being charged over certain crimes. They have managed to persuade victims to appear naked in front of webcam and even masturbate for the girl while they secretly recorded/filmed the process. Eventually, they started extorting money from the victims, threatening them that the videos would be circulated online if they refused to abide to the terms. More than S$100,000 was extorted from the victims.
This is one of the most unusual online scams ever exposed in Singapore. How many people would expect such thing to happen to male victims? Moreover, extortion is always deemed as a major crime in Singapore and thus, most people are quite unlikely to expect it to happen.
This also reflects badly on our society for a 17-year-old girl to showcase her body in the hope of earning trust of her victims. Her boyfriend who is supposed to safeguard her from other guys is making use of her body for the unlawful gain.
Nonetheless, this is a wake-up call for all males not only in Singapore but all over the world.
If you have frequented social networking websites often, you may actually get to see very sexual remarks and requests from guys on girls' profiles. These people are easier to be targeted since they are more open. However, scammmers may prefer potential victims who are less experienced.
We have analysed and pointed out some issues, which guys should take note of.
1. Look into the mirror. Are you so attractive that a girl is dying so badly to see more of you?
2. Hot girls are surrounded by guys, especially when social networking websites are so common; hence, what makes you think the "chiobu" has time to entertain you?
3. Girls in Singapore are generally not as bold as other countries' and do you really think you are this lucky to meet one here?

On 28 February 2012, Mr Lin found out that someone had used his credit card to buy Malaysian and Sri Lanka airline tickets, total about $10,000 in transactions.
Later, Mr Lin figured out that the transaction was made through internet.
When he was asked if he had given away his credit card's details within the past few months, he answered no.
For Mr Lin's case, he was lucky that his bank would be taking care of the issue for him, which would also mean that he would not have suffered any loss in the end. However, he would need to have his credit replaced, causing some inconvenience.

Although you may trust the website, do note that even the Americans' government websites can be hacked - your data on the web can never be 100% secured.

Tagged & Facebook Credit Card Scam Alert - Miyo Minako
Tagged has always been known as a social networking site that scammers favour, due to various reasons (We will write an article to summarize it in future when time allows). There is recently a new trend to combine the use of Tagged and Facebook to create a fake impression to others that the fake accounts are real.
Scammers use Tagged to recruit more friends while inviting the victims-to-be to their fake Facebook accounts.

This is the Tagged account of the "sweet-looking" girl who claims to be living in Singapore. Most Singapore residents would have used MSN. Most normal sweet and hot looking girls would not resort to dirty chats online, mentioning words like "wet dreams".

For those who are not aware of her messages still, she is simply a "cam girl". There are many websites in the internet that employ girls to show her bodies and follow the exact commands of horny visitors who are willing to pay. This "Miyo Minako" seems exactly like one, but with a deeper plot.
She is pretty neat for she (or he?) always makes sure she deletes the previous status before posting a new one.
She has uploaded a few albums, which makes the account more "real" than other fake profiles you can see in Facebook. One of the pictures shows that "she" is from ITE. We are not able to confirm if the photos are stolen, though it is highly possible. Anyway, this scammer has made quite a lot of effort in maintaining the Facebook profile, and has even switched to Facebook Timeline by "herself".
As we scrolling down her Facebook page, we can see that there are a few people who have posted on her Facebook wall - just a few pathetic ones though.
Lee Zhen

Let us explore his profile.
Judging from the photo, "he" looks more like a China man than a Singaporean. Anyway, he has only a friend - Miyo Minako.
Is he a loser or has he created the profile specially for her?
If he is just a normal pervert out in the net, he would have added many other hot girls in Facebook.
Next, we have "Weng Yan"

Similarly, his tune is the same and he has mentioned about "bank card not charged".
Exploring Shin T Akatzki's profile.
He has more friends than the other two - pathetic 102 though.
We strongly believe that this is the first "supporting profile" created to tell "fans" of Mino Minako to approach her to ask her for her weblink and give her their credit card information.
Thereafter, the scammer or the group of scammers who has staged this scam is simply too lazy to work on the other two profiles - to add friends or provide a bit more fake information.
Pardon us for being too "kia si" (scare to die) and not trying out her weblink. But we can assure you that after entering the weblink, you will be prompted to register an account and you have to provide your credit card information.
There are two ways for the scammer to make money, which we cannot confirm.
1. The weblink is a real cam-girls website, which the girls will strip virtually for you and do your commands. The scammer will earn commission from the web owner for making you sign up. He/she may be paid by per sign-up or a percentage of credits the victim (you?) purchases, or both.
2. Entering your credit card detail is an immediate scam. The scammer can use your information to purchase items online immediately.
Who knows... by visiting the URL she gives you, your computer or Facebook account will be hacked?
Maybe, there are more methods for the scammer to make money out of your credit card information. No matter what, you are at a loss for being fooled, thinking that you have made a real hot friend.
Let us look at two conversations with her.
She has recently changed her name to "Natalia Miyo Minako", adding the "Natalia" in front.
14th February 2013: We realise her Facebook URL has been changed to https://www.facebook.com/taliammk even though Facebook does not allow changing of the username.

1. The weblink is a real cam-girls website, which the girls will strip virtually for you and do your commands. The scammer will earn commission from the web owner for making you sign up. He/she may be paid by per sign-up or a percentage of credits the victim (you?) purchases, or both.
2. Entering your credit card detail is an immediate scam. The scammer can use your information to purchase items online immediately.
Who knows... by visiting the URL she gives you, your computer or Facebook account will be hacked?
Maybe, there are more methods for the scammer to make money out of your credit card information. No matter what, you are at a loss for being fooled, thinking that you have made a real hot friend.

Facebook Scam - McDonald's Voucher
This is the latest scam in Facebook. A Facebook event is created by a Facebook page, stating that McDonald's is giving away free vouchers. You have to invite your friends to the event in order to qualify for the voucher.
Facebook event doesn't track how many friends you have invited!
How is it that they know that you have invited 50 or 500 friends to get the $20 or $150 voucher?
This is a scam just to get people to invite more people to their scam website.
There is no free McVoucher!

Candice Wood-Dubois: This is BS!!!!! I sent invitations to all of my friends 300+ went to get my voucher & couldn't get it! The site wanted me to particiapte in surveys & apply for credit cards! GRRRRRRRRR!!!!

There has been a rise in internet love scams, up from last year and we're looking at doing a story on victims of Internet love scams and to find out the reasons why they fell prey to such crime.
We're hoping that Scams Singapore would be able to refer us to victims who were scammed before or were close to being scammed. Rest assured we won't mention any names in our story.
By helping us, Scams Singapore would be doing a public service as the stories and experiences would help to serve as cautionary tales for many other Singaporeans.

Is this Email a Scam?
It has been very common to receive weird and interesting emails from your friends these days.
Hackers have many ways to hack into users' emails accounts and mass send scam emails to email addresses in their contact list.
Below is an example of a freshly generated very interesting email:

Obviously, yes, this is a very common online scam tactic.
If your friend is desperate for money, he will be very direct in his email and not waste time giving fanciful greetings. As much as he tries to be polite, he should have greeted you by your name. This email shows that the sender does not even know who you are.
Do not forget about the technology has advanced so fast that there is MSN, Skype, Yahoo Messenger and even social networking sites such as Facebook. If I were in his situation, I would try these media, where I can talk to friends who are online at the point of time, instead of sending email, which the response is likely to be slower.
Do not neglect the usual typing tone of your friend. In Singapore, many people uses Singlish LAH. Do you think your friend has suddenly become proficient in his English language? Many people R nt used to type in proper English animore, dun u tink so?

I want to transfer him back home to have the surgery implemented there because hysterectomy surgery is very expensive here, Am wondering if you can be of any assistance to me, I need about ($2,500) to make the necessary arrangement; I traveled with little money due to the short time I had to prepare for this trip and never expected things to be the way it is right now. I'll surely pay you back once I get back home, I need to get him home ASAP because he is going through a lot of pain at the moment and the doctor have advised that it necessary that the tumor is operated soon to avoid anything from going wrong. I'll reimburse you at my return.
