Photographer Has Camera Lens Stolen From Around His Neck
The video of the camera lens thieves in action was taken in Saint-Petersburg (Russia). The thieves would target passers-by while the police are unable to stop them.
The thieves work together. One of them will shove something in front of the camera's owner, hiding the camera and lens from his sight. Then, another team-mate will take the chance to remove and steal the lens.
Do take note that similar plot can be happening in other countries as well, and they may not necessary target only camera lenses.
Do not show off your valuable. When travelling, always try to go in pair.

While you do house visiting, do advise the elderly on types of phone and door-to-door scams. Catching "Crime Watch" on the television is a good way to broaden their knowledge as well.
We would also like to apologise for the lack of updates here due our personal tight schedule.
We do have many scam stories to share with everyone but it really takes time to type in appropriate way. For helpful souls who have updated us with scam alert, we may not be able to publish them without evidence because we do not want to wrong any party. At times, we may have to edit the article to exclude names.
Meanwhile, let's do whatever we can for all our family members and friends.

Webcam Scam - Recording and Extorting from Guys
Months ago, the news of the Singapore couple who extorted money from guys over webcam had stunned many people. The scammers conned Singapore guys to show their private parts in webcam, recorded the processes and extorted money from them afterwards.
This is, however, not the end of the scam. While the Singaporean couple are being caught, others, especially foreigners are still out there continuing with their plot.
We are not sure how our local police can deal with scammers who are executing their plans outside Singapore. However, we hope we are able to reduce the number of victims through the blog entry.

Since year 2011, there is one scammer who is known as "Jacky Lee", who has started "her" search for prey through Tagged.com like many other scammers. She would then ask her potential preys to add her in MSN at leejacky79@hotmail.com, Skype at jacky.lee97 and Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/leejacky79 (She has set her privacy, such that probably only friends can view her page).
During that time, we had not heard of such scam and thus did not take note of it. She, however, had been acting weird in the conversations she initiated, trying to hint that she was horny.
After the Singapore scam couple were exposed, "Jacky" continued to try her luck. We wanted to give her a "surprise" but she was too experienced to be fooled. Anyway, below is the full transcript of the MSN conversations.

Being a veteran in the scam plot, Jacky did a screenshot to prove that we did not have a webcam - we had disconnected it on purpose. However, the screenshot she sent over had proven that she was a scammer. At the bottom of the image near the centre, she had dragged an opened software to hide it. The software was "CamStudio", which was used to record video.
By observing the image, "she" was a big gamer who had quite a number of game icons on her desktop. "She" listened to Korean songs and even bothered to change the icon of the folder. There was also another folder by the name of "jerry", which could be "her" real name or another victim.
She was eventually blocked in MSN. Do take note that we are doing this blog on voluntarily basis and thus may not have the time to go deeper into stories like reporters or police.
Through research in the Internet, we have found other people talking about "her". There seem to be quite a number of victims who have fallen for her trick. Some have unfortunately paid "her".
We are not sure if the photos (from her Facebook) and videos (screenshot above) are her in real person or she has downloaded them online. We highly suspect that she is a Filipino who pretends to be a Singaporean schooling in Australia.
Anyway, we hope people will take note of this scammer and not fall into "her" trick. With the information given, reporters can try their luck to "play" with this scammer.
Update (03 October 2012): "She" has changed her Facebook name to "Ac Lee (Wants Hug)" and set her permanent Facebook URL to https://www.facebook.com/iloveyoulee79 .
This is, however, not the end of the scam. While the Singaporean couple are being caught, others, especially foreigners are still out there continuing with their plot.
We are not sure how our local police can deal with scammers who are executing their plans outside Singapore. However, we hope we are able to reduce the number of victims through the blog entry.

Since year 2011, there is one scammer who is known as "Jacky Lee", who has started "her" search for prey through Tagged.com like many other scammers. She would then ask her potential preys to add her in MSN at leejacky79@hotmail.com, Skype at jacky.lee97 and Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/leejacky79 (She has set her privacy, such that probably only friends can view her page).
During that time, we had not heard of such scam and thus did not take note of it. She, however, had been acting weird in the conversations she initiated, trying to hint that she was horny.
After the Singapore scam couple were exposed, "Jacky" continued to try her luck. We wanted to give her a "surprise" but she was too experienced to be fooled. Anyway, below is the full transcript of the MSN conversations.

Being a veteran in the scam plot, Jacky did a screenshot to prove that we did not have a webcam - we had disconnected it on purpose. However, the screenshot she sent over had proven that she was a scammer. At the bottom of the image near the centre, she had dragged an opened software to hide it. The software was "CamStudio", which was used to record video.
By observing the image, "she" was a big gamer who had quite a number of game icons on her desktop. "She" listened to Korean songs and even bothered to change the icon of the folder. There was also another folder by the name of "jerry", which could be "her" real name or another victim.
She was eventually blocked in MSN. Do take note that we are doing this blog on voluntarily basis and thus may not have the time to go deeper into stories like reporters or police.
Through research in the Internet, we have found other people talking about "her". There seem to be quite a number of victims who have fallen for her trick. Some have unfortunately paid "her".
We are not sure if the photos (from her Facebook) and videos (screenshot above) are her in real person or she has downloaded them online. We highly suspect that she is a Filipino who pretends to be a Singaporean schooling in Australia.
Anyway, we hope people will take note of this scammer and not fall into "her" trick. With the information given, reporters can try their luck to "play" with this scammer.
Update (03 October 2012): "She" has changed her Facebook name to "Ac Lee (Wants Hug)" and set her permanent Facebook URL to https://www.facebook.com/iloveyoulee79 .

3 PRC Scammers in Woodlands

We would like to highlight that the scam may can conducted at any place in Singapore, which means that non-Woodlands residents, whether is Singaporean or foreigners, should take note of this.
The public should help each other by observing the neighbourhood and watch out for "aunties" or "uncles" who are approached by suspicious strangers. This is easier to be said than done but we are sure that if everyone does our part, we will be able to stop some of these scam cases and bring the scammers to justice.
By the way, elderly are not "stupid" to be conned. Many do have health issues and thus, they are just vulnerable to scams at certain time of their lives, which will happen to even young people. We just have to do our part to educate everyone.
SINGAPORE : Police have issued a crime alert, warning residents in Woodlands of a scam targeting senior citizens.
An elderly woman was cheated of cash and jewellery by three suspects who are believed to be Chinese nationals.
The suspects, two women and a man, offered to perform prayers for the victim to help her ward off a mishap that could lead to her death.
In exchange, she would hand over her cash and jewellery.
Police have described the male suspect as 1.7 metres tall, medium built and in his 40s.
He was last seen wearing a short-sleeved shirt, black pants and leather shoes.
The two women suspects are in their late 20s, about 1.5 metres tall and slim-built with long hair.
They were last seen wearing white T-shirts and three-quarter pants.
Police urged senior citizens to remain vigilant to prevent themselves from falling prey to fraudsters.
They should not fall for anything that sounds too good to be true, especially if they are asked to surrender their money or valuables.
They should walk away if they suspect anything and inform the police.
The public can help their elderly family members by updating them on such crimes.

Another Internet Romance Scam
Below is another romance scam alert by one of our visitors:
Sorry reporters, this victim did not leave any contact behind as well.
Okay, another romance con artist going by the name of Desmond Cliff, attracts Singaporean females. He claims he is Alaskan, been living in California, and outstationed in Sabah, Malaysia. Works for Chase company. Wife died of childbirth, both parents had died, and only brother left. He is in Badoo.com, facebook and also yahoo messenger. From his accent and spelling and words use, one can tell a little later, that he is not American. Americans don't use 'severally', nor say 'back' as 'buk'.. only UKs and Nigerians do that. Be careful. His stories will look so real when it comes to asking you to help him financially. He would tell you how he got help from others first, and then you are his last resort. How he needed just that much left. I was a victim. Glad it wasn't so much but I am still threatening him to repay me back. Learned my lesson with all this wealth of information on the net. Also, everybody in US will be listed in PeopleSearch, so check out first. Be careful out there.

Media Scams - Bersih 3.0
Even with the rise of the Internet, mainstream media still dominates the news market. Most people in all countries would follow news on the TV because of its convenience and supposed-to-be accuracy. The news reports would release latest news from the government as well, which is essential. People who depend on online news would likely face over-feeding of information from different sources and have the problem of differentiating the truthfulness of reports.
However, in some countries, the media is well controlled by the government such that news can be covered up to make the government look good. News may also tend to be biased against opposition parties. The World Press Freedom Index by Reporters Without Borders is one way to judge the accuracy of the press in all countries.
One of the worst presses in the world currently is Syria's, where the government prevents foreign reporters to enter the country and its state controlled media has been broadcasting about how the government is well-liked by its citizens when many parts of the country are having regular protest against the government. Many houses have been destroyed by the government in the name of warring against "terrorists" who have taken up arms after their peaceful protests have been cracked down deadly by the government.
There are endless ways that state controlled media can be propaganda or be used to cover up flaws of the government. For example, when two politicians from the ruling and opposition parties are at loggerheads, the newspaper can use an uglier photo of the opposition politician so that he or she would look bad, painting a bad image over him. If video recording is included, the news on TV can put the argument of the ruling party's politician last so as to create an impression that he or she is the final winner. When there is a chaos caused by public transport operators' lack of preparation, state media can start filming when situations are better controlled or filming can be done at places that look neater. When high ranking government officers are involved in crimes and are being sacked immediately before trial, the media can focus on the word "ex officer" to make the government look better.
Recently, Astro (in Malaysia) has censored news from BBC and Al-Jazeera on the footage of Bersih 3.0. Malaysian Police said 25,000 had attended the demonstration but rally organisers said 250,000 protested.

We revealed that viewers in Malaysia saw 30 seconds less of the report than people watching the same news bulletin across the rest of the world.
These crucial seconds included a scene of a police officer apparently shooting at peaceful civilians and also statements by demonstrators explaining why they had taken to the streets to protest at election rigging.
The removal of these sequences could be judged to have introduced a bias away from the more even-handed and objective approach of the original report, in an attempt to show the police and the government in a better light.
However, as the resulting discussion has revealed, this form of “self-censorship’ by press and broadcast licence holders is commonplace in Malaysia. In order to keep their licences, organisations have to abide by a ‘Content Code’ laid down by the BN regime.

Following the election watchdog’s last July 9 rally, censors had blacked out parts of an article in The Economist, which had called Putrajaya’s handling of the event overzealous.
The article titled “Taken to the cleaners — an overzealous government response to an opposition rally” had chronicled the chaos on July 9 when police fired chemicals to disperse tens of thousands who had gathered to demand electoral reforms.
Among the parts blacked out were mentions of the heavy-handedness by the police and accusations that the government had withdrawn its offer for protesters to use a stadium for the rally.
The Home Ministry had also used black ink to blot out portions of the article that mentioned the death of one protester and the alleged bombardment of chemicals into the compound of the Tung Shin Hospital.

So it turned into staged people following a guy around a mall trying to cause a commotion and then confused people asking about it from crappy cell phone camera angles. My friends and I did this in the 80s. Seems i looked at a lot like John Cougar Mellencamp who was hugely popular back in those days. Anyway we had a lot of fun with it.
Last Saturday we went to a popular mall in Virginia and conducted a bit of a social experiment. Using his real first and middle name, and with the help of just a few staged people, tons of people believed Thomas was a famous actor, including mall security. The mall assigned us a security detail who escorted us everywhere and helped close stores for the supposed celebrity. They also took us through private corridors to avoid the frenzy. Our cameras were quickly shut down, and most of our footage was captured with a single iphone. The following is just a taste of all the autographs, pictures, and people who wanted get close to all the commotion. Do something fun today.

Fake Tsunami Scam Alert Using Old Video
On Wednesday, 11 April 2012, a 8.9 earthquake occurred in West Sumatra, Indonesia. There was issue of tsunami warning but none had taken place. During the earthquake, residents of a few neighbourhood countries, such as Malaysia and Singapore, could feel the shaking as well.
A Singaporean "Adam Tan" who was at Penang, Malaysia reported on his Facebook status "Earthquake in Penang!!" at 4.51pm on the very same day.
When many people from all over the world were concerned about the Indonesians' well-being, Youtube footage surfaced showing that smaller waves of tsunami had occurred due to the earthquake. Eventually, there were many people who exposed that the videos were re-uploaded from old videos taken years back.
The tsunami is a scam or prank, whichever you call it, but it is definitely disgusting to joke about such thing. It will definitely cause public panic to people staying in Indonesia and Malaysia.

If you or any of your friends have experienced such scam, do step out and share your story because it can help many people to avoid being scammed.

By helping us, Scams Singapore would be doing a public service as the stories and experiences would help to serve as cautionary tales for many other Singaporeans.

Tagged Scammer Lawrence Tan Failed
The tagged scammer's account, which we have reported last year, has finally been removed by Tagged on around 9th January 2012.
Initially, the owner of the photo stolen by this scammer had tried to email Tagged as indicated in their website. After the first respond of Tagged to ask for a recent photo of the owner/victim, all emails sent to them were "bounded" back. There was totally no way to contact the staffs for assistance as they did not even have a "contact us" form.
This Lawrence Tan scammer eventually strike using the mobile phone chat feature of Tagged to try to hook up with the victim's friend (he obviously didn't know their relationship) and she managed to make him divulge his MSN email (lawrencex789@gmail.com), and thus pawning himself.
He could have been considering to abandon that email address ever since...
Anyway, if you were to google for the email lawrencex789@gmail.com, you can probably find him being involved in an adult forum, which is mainly in Chinese language. A brief investigation of the website shows that it displays photos and contact numbers of China women who come over to Singapore to make extra money.
You can probably guess what Lawrence has been up to all these years.
Before Lawrence Tan's Tagged account was removed, probably with the aid of the victim's friends who had helped to report him, he had uploaded and changed his default photo to a picture of a dance floor. He had removed another victim's photo from his profile but still keeping the latter one.
Girls, please be aware of the people you make friends with through the internet. If they were to add you up in MSN or other messengers such as Yahoo or Skype, make sure they have webcam to prove that the photos in their social network profiles really belong to them.
Please do not be fooled by guys with big belly, sitting in front of their computers and getting satisfied by online teasing or whatever.

Unusual Tagged Scam - Social Network Site Scam
With the emerging of social networking sites such as Facebook, MySpace and Tagged, we get to experience more scams than ever.
Many people have created fake social profiles for many reasons. Some people are addicted to the sites' games and need the extra boost from another account, while some are purely for marketing purpose. Many foreign ladies who are working as cam girls or social escorts have made their presence more than ever in the social networking sites, which is safer than getting clients at Geylang physically. There are also scams that con male users to sign up at certain cam sites, which require their credit cards information.
Details of all these scams and how to identify them will be given in future blog posts.
In this post, we will share with you an unusual scam incident...
While most of the scam targets are male users of the social networking sites, photos of female users and hot celebrities are often being stolen and uploaded into the bogus user accounts. By pretending as hot girls, male users are likely to add or accept them as friends, and thus increasing the prey list.
However, this time, we have received a complaint about a scammer stealing picture of a male user in Tagged.
This scammer has uploaded 2 photos. The first photo is http://i7.tagstat.com/image06/0/5602/0008054s5o2.jpg, which seems to be stolen from Facebook from https://fbcdn-photos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/32097_398059863710_589113710_3979120_8259239_n.jpg and the scammer is too lazy to rename the caption, which shows the filename by default, so that we are able to find the original photo. However, we are unable to do reverse search for the Facebook profile of the original photo for further investigation.
This is the print-screen of the fake profile.
The Tagline "young and curious :)" would relate to perverts, who are hinting at girls that they are curious about sexual stuffs.
It seems that the scammer has registered the fake account since more than a year ago, but his Profile Views is sadly standing at only 704 times after being reported and friends of the victim has visited it.
This is probably the reason why the scammer has to steal another photo and use it to attract more girls.
The scammer's friends list currently has 80 friends, of which, more than 90% are female. Through his sexy Tagline, it is highly possible that the account is created to target female users who are open-minded and want to "try out" young guys who are curious about sex.
He has tried to get females to add him in MSN using the email lawrencex789@gmail.com.
We urge female users of social networking sites to beware of fakers. It is absolutely nothing wrong to make friends online and even date with your net friends, but we hope you will not end up meeting some old and fat guys who have shown you some hunks' photos.
We would also like to urge users to try to put watermark on their photos before uploading to their social profiles. It will reduce the chance of being stolen. Even if the scammers were to edit the photos to remove the watermarks, the photo size and quality will be affected, and thus it is easier for you to complain to the staffs of the social network sites to prove the ownership of the original photo.

Online Scams Regarding Pets Adoption
There is a demand for pets adoption since it is usually much cheaper than buying directly from pet shops and this will aid in saving the pets from being abandoned by helpless owners who somehow cannot keep their pets anymore. Other than the price, some pets are rare in Singapore and can only be imported from other countries.
In many cases, people breed pets specially to just for sales. They place advertisements online and claim "pets for adoption" and demand for adoption fee. "Adoption" is a term which has been badly abused by these pet sellers.
Recently, a lady was searching online to buy a kitten and she was almost being scammed. Somehow, she got into the Singapore news to share with everyone about the fraud.
In fact, this type of pet adoption scam has been ongoing since years ago. It is quite surprising that finally a person has stepped out to educate the public about it.
The pet scam's plot is simple: The "owner" of the pet will claim that the pet is for free but demand for a fee to transport the pet over from a foreign country. He/she will also promise to take care of all necessary documentation and arrangements to ensure that the pet is being delivered right at the buyer's house. After the buyer transfers the demanded fee over, the "owner" will go missing.
New scam techniques may have evolved.
We hope online shoppers will take extra precaution in buying things, especially from foreign sellers. This should also be applicable to online shoppers from all other countries.
Don't be a prey of scam.
Do donate your money to charity organisation instead of being conned.

NTUC Voucher - Bounced Cheque Scam
On Thursday, 17 November 2011, two men aged 19 and 22 had used a bounced cheque to buy $500,000 worth of NTUC FairPrice vouchers at FairPrice's head office in Upper Thomson Road.
Somehow, the standard procedure for issuing vouchers that required cheque payment to be cleared first was not followed. The two men were apprehended near Hougang Street 91 and Bukit Batok East Avenue 4 on Saturday, 19 November 2011. $15,000 worth of vouchers had already been used.
The NTUC vouchers serial numbers ranges from 607379330 to 607404329.
This is, in fact, a very weird scam incident that has taken place in Singapore where crime rate is rather low. The ages of the criminals are young and what makes a person not has a slight suspicion about their financial status? What makes this scam more interesting is that it involves such a huge sum of money and yet the FairPrice's staff has made such a huge mistake.
$500,000 is around the cost of a HDB 5-room flat, which Singapore couples have to work over 30 years in order to repay the loan. If such big amount of sales cannot be handled properly, how about smaller sales?
We hope all companies, including those from other countries, would take precaution of such cheque scam. Never release your product or voucher until the bank has confirmed that the cheque has been cleared.

$500,000 is around the cost of a HDB 5-room flat, which Singapore couples have to work over 30 years in order to repay the loan. If such big amount of sales cannot be handled properly, how about smaller sales?
We hope all companies, including those from other countries, would take precaution of such cheque scam. Never release your product or voucher until the bank has confirmed that the cheque has been cleared.
